Shortcomings of Google Translate: Not such a drawback after all

As I glanced over Ines’ latest post, I thought about those lucky readers who don’t understand Basque, thus sparing themselves the pain of going through yet another of her whiny bits. Seriously, could she get any cheesier? We understand you’ve got issues and you’re trying to deal, but for the love of god, couldn’t you do it more like, I don’t know, to yourself? Using your inside voice? Talking to a gay friend? All the girls in the movies have one, don’t you?

Then, I realized we’ve got Google Translate now and even non-Basque speakers could potentially be subjected to Ines’ bipolarism as well. I used it quite a bit in February to figure out in Spanish what my friends were saying in French, plus I translated a sentence from German to English not so long ago in order to understand a colleague’s status update. Overall, it works pretty well when you’re dealing with mainstream languages. Basque, however, is another story:

Granted, I don’t know Ines very well, but I doubt she’s even remotely thinking about “adopting a boy behavior”, and I can think about at least one thing to be extracted. And who the hell is Agnes? Just what Ines needs, another reason to be jealous. I should point out that Google did score with the translation of “It may just be coincidence” (let’s give credit where credit is due), plus I totally understand about “not being able to afford more”. I’ve got two kids and they are more into Apple products than I am.

It looks like, for the time being, non-Basque speakers can continue to live oblivious to Ines’ troubles. How lucky for them!
