Pairs Championship week 6: Irujo and Zabaleta go top

There was a changing of the guard at the top of the Pairs Championship standings as Bengoetxea VI and Beroiz suffered their first defeat, at the hands of Titin III and Merino II. They lost 22-20 in a very evenly matched game at Adarraga. After having been tied at five and seven, the Asegarce pair looked to have established some supremacy at 16-12, but the Riojans, enjoying their home advantage, fought back. The pairs were tied again at 19 and 20 and there was some controversy when Bengoetxea and Beroiz felt that two crucial refereeing calls had gone against them on 19-20 and 19-21. These were alluded to by Bengoetxea in the subsequent press conference, where he also admitted to nerves as he struggled to overcome Titin. Titin was indeed marginally the better of the forwards, but the player of the match, with his three winners to a single error, was Beroiz.
Scoring sequence: 0-1, 2-1, 5-5, 7-7, 10-12, 16-12, 16-16, 17-19, 19-19, 19-20, 20-20, 20-22
Winners/errors: Titin 8/4, Bengoetxea 9/8
Balls hit: 678

Bengoetxea and Beroiz’s loss means that Martinez de Irujo and Zabaleta go top of the table on points difference. They got the better of Arretxe II and Begino in Pamplona. The favourites outdid their opponents for pace and set the tone right from the outset, racing to 7-0, 10-2 and 13-3. Arretxe and Begino made a brave attempt at a counterattack, closing a little to 14-7, but the eventual winners did not let up for long and closed the match out 22-14 with the minimum of fuss.

The match in Hendaye on Friday was presumably designed as a showcase for Xala in front of his local Iparralde fans, but it was not to be as injury forced his replacement by Jon Jaunarena. Jaunarena, making his debut in a top tier championship, acquitted himself very well indeed, despite the eventual loss suffered by he and Barriola. They were undone 22-19 at the hands of Berasaluze VIII and Albisu who seem finally to be finding their feet in this tournament. This is a second win on the bounce for the Asegarce pair, who have now succeeded in pulling themselves into sixth in the table. Berasaluze was the difference in the final analysis, though Jaunarena only allowed matters to slip in the final few points with some errors of inexperience. Both defenders were solid but fairly unspectacular.
Winners/errors: Berasaluze 13/4, Jaunarena 10/6, Albisu 1/3, Barriola ½
Match time: 50 minutes with 16 minutes of actual play
Balls hit: 330

Ibai Zabala sat out this round of the competition with a hand problem. He was replaced by Alexis Apraiz who assisted Olaizola II to a comfortable win over Gonzalez and Zubieta in Eibar. The vast disparity in this match came in the forwards, where Olaizola ran rings around Gonzalez. Gonzalez, for his part was highly ineffectual, managing only one winner to four errors. In contrast, Zubieta played well behind while Apraiz leaked errors. The initial closeness of the game, which stood at 7-7, was due largely to the unsteadiness of Apraiz, but once he had settled, Olaizola dominated and there was no way back for the Aspe duo, who now languish in 7th. The victors rise to 4th, a trajectory they will hope to continue when Zabala returns this weekend.
Scoring sequence: 0-1/ 1/ 4-1/ 4-2/ 5-2/ 5/ 6-5/ 7-5/ 7/ 8-7/ 10-7/ 10-8/ 16-8/ 16-12/ 17-12/ 17-13

San Mateo: the story so far

Moving house this week has rather messed with my intended coverage of San Mateo, Logrono’s major festival, but there is still much excitement to come in the Riojan capital this weekend. Olaizola II and Apraiz defend title in Lekeitio

Tuesday 4th September, Lekeitio

OLAIZOLA II – APRAIZ  beat BERASALUZE VIII – ALBISU 22-18

The final of the Lekeitio San Antolin tournament was held on Tuesday and saw victory for the 2011 champions in a hard fought duel. I only saw brief snippets so cannot report in too much detail, but the game was extremely close for the first half an hour, with neither pair able to get more than two ahead after Olaizola and Apraiz had overcome an early deficit of 0-4. The match up between Olaizola and Berasaluze, who has been in great shape of late, left nothing to be desired. Berasaluze came at the Manomanista champion all guns blazing, several times passing him crosscourt with his left arm, with an air of ‘anything you can do, I can do better’. Greater consistency put Berasaluze and Albisu into a handsome lead at 16-10 but where Olaizola is involved, almost no comeback is too much of a challenge. He shifted up a gear when his back was the the wall and was able to get on top of his forward rival. At the same time, Albisu’s error count increased in contrast to Apraiz who grew in confidence as the match progressed. Once the favourites got ahead at 19-17, their opponents had few answers and the match was sealed. Aimar Olaizola was deservedly named player of the tournament as he notched up his third festival victory of the summer.

Scoring sequence: 0-4/6-4/6/7/8/9/10-11/10-16/17-16/17/19-17/19-18/22-18
Olaizola II: 2 service winners, 8 winners

Lekeitio Final: Today!

The final of Lekeitio’s Sanantolines tournament takes place today at 5pm CEST. It pits defending champions Olaizola II and Apraiz against Berasaluze VIII and Albisu. In 2011 they took the title 22-14 over Berasaluze and Begino, meaning that Albisu is the only difference in the line up this time around. In the first semi final, which took place on Saturday, a brilliant Berasaluze led his pair to a 22-16 win over Martinez de Irujo and Merino II. On Sunday, Gonzalez replaced Xala in a pair with Zubieta, and despite a strong start, they proved unable to overcome Olaizola, who hit his stride in the second half of the game just as Gonzalez’s form dipped. They took the victory 22-12. Olaizola and Apraiz will be the favourites thanks largely to the presence of the former, but Berasaluze’s form of late will give he and Albisu a genuine chance.

San Fermin Finalists set, plus a coverage guide

Apologies for the lack of blow by blow coverage this week; I’ve hardly been at home! Anyway, we now know the identities of the pairs who will contest the San Fermin pairs final tomorrow night at Labrit. On Wednesday, Bengoetxea VI-Begino beat Olaizola II-Apraiz 22-18 to book their place as the best pair in group A, which gives Bengoetxea a shot at adding the pairs crown to the Cuatro y Medio one he took last Saturday. In group B it came down to points difference with Xala and Zubieta needing at least 15 on the scoreboard to go through in their match against Martinez de Irujo-Merino II. This they did with ease, proceeding to 18-7 before Irujo was forced to retire hurt with a sprained left ankle. He is expected to be out of action for around ten days, so thankfully for him it has proved to be nothing overly serious.

There is no pelota on ETB tonight due to the San Fermin schedules; the final is tomorrow on the last night of the festival and will end just before the citizens of Pamplona gather for the ‘Pobre de mi’ in front of the town hall. Coverage of both events will be live in the usual places.

San Fermin: opening weekend round-up

The opening weekend of San Fermin 2012 saw some great pelota, and first on the bill was the festival’s cuatro y medio final between two Navarrese players, Oinatz Bengoetxea and Juan Martinez de Irujo. Despite Bengoetxea’s excellent semi final win over Aimar Olaizola, and Irujo’s loss to the same player in the Manomanista final, Irujo was the favourite here; two straight big match losses seemed almost inconceivable. However, Bengoetxea had not read this script and barely gave Irujo a chance to hit his stride, serving with power and playing at a whirlwind pace. The match was close at 9-7 but eight straight points for Bengoetxea killed off any resistance Irujo could muster. He pulled it back to 17-12, but by that time the die was cast. Victory for Oinatz, 22-12 in 46 minutes.

Both pairs matches played at the weekend finished with the same scoreline. In the first, which took place on Saturday, Olaizola II and Apraiz beat Titin III and Barriola 22-14. Yesterday, 2010 Pairs Champions Xala and Zubieta defeated Berasaluze VIII and Albisu 22-14. Berasaluze was in many ways the more potent of the forwards here, but he was also the more error prone. Xala, while he managed only half the winners of his opponent, committed no errors to Berasaluze’s five. The bigger difference was in the defenders, where Aitor Zubieta had an excellent game with three winners to one error. Albisu was wayward at times and could not match Zubieta’s relentless pressure. Titin III and Barriola play Bengoetxea VI and Begino tonight, while Berasaluze and Albisu play Irujo and Merino II tomorrow.

Semi-finals await for Berasaluze VIII-Albisu and Xala-Laskurain

As pelota’s top exponents arrived at the final weekend of round robin matches, there were four pairs vying for two places. Pre-tournament favourites Juan Martinez de Irujo and Abel Barriola, Xala and Laskurain, Berasaluze VIII and Albisu, and Bengoetxea VI and Apraiz all had a theoretical chance of making it into third or fourth behind Olaizola II and Beroiz, and Titin III and Merino II who were home and dry. Given the closeness of affairs in the middle of the table, it is little wonder than emotions ran high.

Irujo and Barriola knew that if they lost to Berasaluze and Albisu on Saturday, they would have to rely on Bengoetxea and Apraiz beating Xala and Laskurain on Sunday to stand any chance. Thanks perhaps largely to Albisu, they were forced to sweat it out as the young defender played with poise and style to shade Barriola, thus taking Irujo largely out of the game. The pre-tournament favourites lost 22-12. Berasaluze also rose to the occasion, riding on the crest of Albisu’s wave on his way to eleven winners in open play. Irujo’s errors outnumbered his scoring shots as the Asegarce pair seized every chance that came to them. The pairs were tied at 9-9 but from that juncture, it was all Berasaluze and Albisu. Irujo and Barriola’s demise in this championship has been something of a shock. It almost seemed a forgone conclusion in the opening weeks that they would reach not only the semi-finals but the final itself. How are the mighty fallen.

The lifeline was nowhere to be seen for Irujo and Barriola on Sunday as Xala and Laskurain took a nail biting 22-20 win over Bengoetxea VI and Apraiz in Eibar. This meant that they themselves qualified at the expense both Irujo and Barriola and Bengoetxea and Apraiz. This result also gave Berasaluze and Albisu their official green light. The game was an excellent one, in which the eventual winners led 20-16 before being pegged back to level terms at 20-20. Bengoetxea did everything he could in his bid for qualification and played with great verve, scoring twelve winners to Xala’s nine. Luckily for the Manomanista champion, Laskurain held sway over Apraiz, who was once again inconsistent in defence.

The final match of the qualifying stages was utterly inconsequential, as second placed Titin III and Merino II played Arretxe II and Begino in Tolosa. Amazingly, the underdogs pulled a 22-18 win out of the bag against the Riojan pair, who had surely let their collective foot off the gas. This result means that Arretxe and Begino escape the ignominy of last place and finish in seventh, one place above Aritz Lasa and Zubieta, or whichever pair represented them in any given week.

The Penultimate Week of Pairs Qualifying: Four in the Hunt for Two Places

The only pair certain of qualification before this past weekend was that of OLAIZOLA II – BEROIZ, but not content with taking their foot off the throttle and coasting through the final two weeks, they dished out another hammering, this time to XALA – LASKURAIN, whom they beat 22-13 in Vitoria-Gasteiz. In doing so, the dealt them a blow as the vanquished pair slip out of the qualification places into sixth, one point in arrears of Olaizola and Beroiz’s empresa colleagues Berasaluze and Albisu. The one negative for the top pair is that Beroiz sits out this coming weekend through injury. He will be replaced by Mendizabal II with whom Olaizola won the tournament in 2008. They play the ailing Lasa and Zubieta on Friday, or whoever may play in their place. Xala and Laskurain face Bengoetxea and Apraiz in their fight for survival.

MARTINEZ DE IRUJO – BARRIOLA look as though they made be overcoming their recent wobbles; a 22-15 win over BENGOETXEA VI – APRAIZ in Urduliz puts them third, level on points with Berasaluze and Albisu behind them. Irujo and Barriola were forced to come from behind against a partnership who realised it was very likely do or die. Bengoetxea dominated in the early stages but his hold disintegrated from 12-6 and Irujo upped the ante and Apraiz began to feel Barriola’s heat. Though they closed gamely to 13-14, the Aspe pair proved to be in possession of an extra gear and their pressure drove their opponents to a raft of costly errors. The defeated pair face an uphill challenge to qualify, but depending on other results, a win over Xala and Laskurain could still be enough.

In the dead rubber in Tolosa, ARRETXE II – BEGINO salvaged some pride from their sorry campaign by beating GONZALEZ* – PASCUAL* 22-8. Gonzalez and Pascual were playing in place of Aritz Lasa and Zubieta who are both injured, and for the second week running were forced to watch their proxies making a mess of things in their name. Gonzalez will have done little here to support his contention that he should have been in the tournament ahead of Lasa in the first place.

Pairs, week 11: five pairs now fight for three places

Saturday 3rd March, Pamplona: BENGOETXEA VI – APRAIZ beat ARITZ LASA – PASCUAL* 22-10

It is over and out for Aritz Lasa and the luckless Zubieta. There was talk of Zubieta returning this week but with qualification almost out of the question and a sensible desire to recover completely from the hand troubles which have plagued him this year, Pascual once again took up the mantle. Oinatz Bengoetxea has lacked consistency thus far in the tournament and needed a performance from the top drawer to remind both himself and us what a great player he is. At Labrit, he found his mojo with a staggering sixteen winners to no errors. Aritz Lasa, who showed flashes of brilliance last week, could not so much as hint at that this time round with a return of six to three. The defenders were more evenly matched, but in the face of a forward so completely on top of his game, their effect on the outcome of the match was minimal at best. Bengoextea and Apraiz are right in the frame for one of the remaining three semi-final places and with the unlikely demise of Irujo and Barriola, their chances look all the brighter.

Scoring sequence: 2-0, 2-2, 4-2, 4-5, 14-5, 14-6, 20-6, 20-10, 22-10

Winners/errors: Bengoetxea 16/0, Apraiz 2/2, Lasa 6/3, Pascual 1/1

Saturday 3rd March, Amorebieta: BERASALUZE VIII – ALBISU beat XALA – LASKURAIN 22-12

This match was all about Pablo Berasaluze. Perhaps sensing that things were getting exceedingly tight in the fight for semi-final berths, the man from Berriz utterly annihilated Manomanista champion Xala in a whirlwind display of dominance. Fifteen winners in open play plus two with the serve tells its own story. In the face of this, Xala could only muster only one winner to one error. Xala and Laskurain had previously taken four matches in a row, but their run was brought to an abrupt halt as the Asegarce pair took their second win in as many weeks to slip into second place in the standings.

Scoring sequence: 1-1, 1-2, 2-5, 2-6, 3-11, 3-12, 4-12, 7-13, 8-15, 9-15, 11-16, 12-20, 12-22

Sunday 4th March, Logrono: OLAIZOLA II – BEROIZ beat TITIN III – MERINO II 22-16

One almost runs out of things to say when reporting on yet another win for Olaizola and Beroiz, but at Adarraga their lives were not made easy. The home pairing of Titin and Merino took the game to the undefeated duo with much verve and no fear. Olaizola and Beroiz went ahead early, leading comfortably at 8-2 and 10-4, but their rivals fought back, taking the lead, and the match became exceedingly tight. The favourites drew level again at 15 and 16 and it seemed as if it would go down to the wire, with Olaizola showing rare signs of weakness. However, one crack in the Riojan army and he was able to seize the initiative, adding to his total of fifteen winners on his way to a 22-16 win which was in reality a closer run thing than the score might suggest. Beroiz was, again, imperious in defence, shading Merino in a battle of exciting young talent.

Scoring sequence: 0-2, 1-5, 2-8, 4-10, 8-10, 11-11, 11-13, 13-13, 15-13, 15-15, 16-16, 16-22

Winners/errors: Olaizola 15/4, Beroiz 1/1, Titin 9/3, Merino 2/3

Rampant Titin and classy Merino ascend the ladder

Friday 24th February, Irun

TITIN III – MERINO II beat BENGOETXEA VI – APRAIZ 22-11

Pairs Championship

This Championship has been billed from the start as a two horse race between Olaizola II-Beroiz and Martinez de Irujo-Barriola. However, thanks in part to the indifference of the latter pairing in the past few weeks, coupled with Irujo’s illness, a new contender is emerging. The Riojan combination of experience and youth had won five of its nine matches prior to Friday and sat in the midst of those seeking a way to squeeze into the last two semi-final berths. However, Titin and Merino’s efforts in Irun have lifted them into second place, ahead of dead certs Irujo and Barriola. That they find themselves in this elevated state is thanks to the sheer doggedness of Titin and the emerging class of David Merino, a towering beacon of future promise.

Titin and Merino had almost everything their way in this match. Titin took control right from the start with five clean winners in the first seven points. The other two points in this early passage came as a result of errors from Apraiz, who was put under searing pressure from the great veteran. Merino was the perfect foil, clean elegant and devastatingly accurate from any distance. Titin was out foxed by a short ball from Apraiz in the tenth point and fell short down the wall, but the Asegarce pair failed to produce a clean winner until the defender got one over Merino’s head at 1-12. After this confidence boost, a sign that scoring points was in fact possible, Bengoetxea picked up two in a row with a txoko and a cross court swipe while almost flat against the front wall. However, such moments of inspiration from the usually effervescent forward were few and far between. He chipped away at the Aspe lead in ones and twos, but only appeared to have discovered his true style when it was far too late, at least taking his pair into double figures with a run of three clean winners before the Riojans closed the deal. The winning point came from the hand of Merino, who demonstrating his will to be adventurous as well as merely solid, pulled off a txoko from an impressive distance.

Bengoetxea did not play badly, indeed he made only one error, but Titin was in magisterial form and struck twice as many winners as his opposite number, who could do little to break his control. Apraiz, although he began with little promise, found his range as the game progressed, but proved unable to disrupt Merino’s serenity. This loss has done little to help their cause, though they still have their chances. For Team Rioja however, it seems the only way is up. They will have home advantage against Olaizola and Beroiz this weekend and may fancy themselves to get close, although the table toppers are an entirely different proposition.
