A Basque in Boise

Ibai Gómez: An interview with one of Athletic’s youngest stars (only Spanish)

I was talking with my friend the other day about how many times in their lives people are born. Some are born the first time the visit that special place they always wanted to see, others are born when they become parents.

Last night, with the help of ETB’s Lontzo Sainz (Networking Director), Valentín Elguezabal (Sports), and Luis (Camera man), and Patxi Xabier Fernández (Athletic’s press manager) I was able to fulfill an all-time dream: an interview with an Athletic de Bilbao player.

Ibai Gómez, one of Athletic’s youngest players headed for success, was nice enough to hang around after their training session and press conference to answer a couple more questions for A Basque in Boise. Unfortunately, I’m still on vacation, people to see, places to go, so I haven’t had time to translate the interview into English.

For now, I leave you guys with the video in Spanish and I will come back soon with the translation.

I think I know that friend you talk about in the very first sentence of the article.. hehe. Great vid Henartxo, and Ibai proved to be as nice as he looks both in the pitch and outside of it.

Jejeje, bai, I think you do know who I’m talking about. I will write about that more sometime, if you don’t mind, but today’s post was Ibai’s. He was awesome!

An incredible rise to stardom in such a short space of time.Only three years ago,he was playing regional football with Santutxu, then we see him score that fantastic goal against Schalke in the Europa League quarter final. He actually is one of the few of the current Athletic players who is from Bilbao.

Great interview and blog. He comes across really well, hope he gets more of a run this season. I work for a small production company called Sport Syndicate International which has been commissioned to make a weekly la liga show. Our client has asked us to interview as many South American players as possible as that’s where our main audience will be. We would love to have an interview with Amorebieta but are having a hard time getting through to anyone at the club at the moment (probably has something to do with Javi Martinez leaving). Do you have Patxi Xabier Fernández’s contact info by any chance?
    All the best
