A Basque in Boise

EUP!

Listening to my friend last night talking about the guy in South America who keeps her awake in Boise made me kind of sad, because I know how the story ends. This morning, I got up and number 11 crushed me without mercy. Then, I hear on the radio that people in Boise spend an average on $700 on Prom night. I didn’t know I could detest the idea of Prom more than I already do, but seeing how sending my daughter to the dance looking like a wedding cake with braces will cost me a trip to the Basque Country, I realized it is possible.

I was this close to writing the nastiest post on the issue, in an effort to vent. Thankfully, I got busy at work and by the time I sat down to do it, blue had been replaced with red and white, Prom didn’t matter anymore, and life was beautiful.

Athletic de Bilbao made history today with a 3-1 win over Sporting Lisboa, which got them into another European final, 35 years later. Not only that, but the Lions will also play this year against FC Barcelona in the King’s Cup final. I heard the first half on the radio, saw most of the second half on the Internet. My friends from Euskadi stayed right along with me by email, Facebook, WhatsApp and chat throughout the entire game.

In a time where money talks and soccer teams fork over millions of dollars to buy their players, it’s refreshing to see how a team made up of local players can still make dreams happen.

AUPA ATHLETIC! GORA MUTILAK!

If like me, you were wondering where the audio for the clip came from, here you go. It’s a motivational speech by Coach Flowers.

I like your talk of Red and White…but don’t get mad at prom. It is a rite of passage in the United States, a miserable time shopping for the dress, a great night out with your friends all glammed up. And then even bette 20 years later to talk about your date and your night. It is an American event and your daughter will love it one day…and I see you out there with all the other parents snapping pictures and being the proud mommy of a wedding cake topper with braces!

I know, it is my fate. Besides, I wouldn’t want my daughter to get mad at me when she didn’t have a horrible prom picture to laugh about with their friends, 20 years later.

    However… 700 bucks?!?

Did you ever stop and think that 700 bucks today may very well mean 1800 bucks by the time Maitane goes to prom night? Just an optimistic thought to start your Friday. You’re welcome! And Gora Athletic!!
